Love in Tinseltown is always considered a dangerous path. It’s not that Hollywood couples are less loyal than those living on Main Street, USA – as all love duos in this country suffer from the potential of long term dreams turning into short-lived, broken experiences. It’s more about the intrusive and muckraking nature of the media, coupled with difficult schedules, lengthy location-shoots, media tours and the myriad of other extraneous elements that come with being a celebrity.
According to statistical expert, Garth Sundem, “It turns out that overall fame doesn’t matter as much as the flavor of the fame. It’s tabloid fame that dooms you.” An article in the New York Times summarizes Sundem’s methodology as “It’s the wife’s fame that really matters. While the husband’s NYT/ENQ ratio is mildly predictive, the effect is so much weaker than the wife’s that it’s not included in the new equation. Nor are some variables from the old equation, like the number of previous marriages and the age gap between husband and wife.”
But against all odds, the couples we are featuring today have prevailed regardless of the tabloid gossip, Hollywood rumors and level of stardom. Check out our favorites and let us know – think these couples have staying power?
11. Dax Shepard & Kristen Bell
This adorable Hollywood couple has been together over eight years and is visually one of the cutest twosomes around. Dax and Kristen also made a very important vow in 2009 when they decided they would not wed until their gay friends were also legally able to do the same. They kept the vow and finally married in 2013 in a wedding that was reported to cost $142 in total (Beverly Hills County Clerk’s office). They recently had a child and appear to be loving their new parental roles.
10. George Clooney & Amal Alamuddin
When a committed bachelor is willing to hang up his title for the love of his life, you know it is the real deal. Yet, there are already rumors about a potential split due to Amal’s disdain for George’s Hollywood pals and living in the spotlight. We’d like to think that Clooney knew what he was doing when he proposed to Amal and that this union will be the happy-ever-after kind. We’ll have to see what the next year brings, but for now, they are moving to their place in New York City for the summer, which is bound to bring changes for the couple.
9. Brad & Angelina
Seriously, any two people who can keep love alive while parenting six children, working as A-list actors/directors and being hounded by the paparazzi 24/7, is amazing. Longevity seems to be on the Pitt–Jolie schedule and even the tabloids have stopped all rumors of any signs of a downward trend. It seems Brangelina is here to stay.
8. Tom Brady & Gisele Bundchen
After a five year relationship with Leonardo DiCaprio, Gisele began dating New England Patriots quarterback Tom Brady back in 2006 when they were set up on a blind date. Nearly three years later, the couple was wed (2/09) in a small church ceremony. The couple lives a “green” life, with a home that uses solar energy, gray water system, energy-reducing lighting system and a rainwater recovery system. Also, the couple has two children, Benjamin and Vivian, and are very family-oriented. After nearly ten years, it seems these two are bonded for life.
7. Will Smith & Jada Pinkett Smith
Reports of Will Smith and Jada Pinkett Smith divorcing hits the tabloids just about every year. In fact, Smith revealed his thoughts when he told Ellen Degeneres, “What I found is divorce just can’t be an option. It’s really that simple. And I think that’s the problem with L.A. — there are so many options. So a huge part of the success for Jada and I is that we just removed the other options.” The couple reportedly has an open relationship that is built on trust and integrity and have been together over 14 years.
6. John Legend & Chrissy Teigen
Almost eight years have gone by since the couple met on the set of John Legend‘s music video “Stereo” (2007). They tied the knot in 2013 after dating for several years. Chrissy Teigen, a successful Sports Illustrated swimsuit model, admitted in an interview in Cosmopolitan magazine, “I’m not going to lie. We hooked up. [And then when he went on tour] I left him by himself for a while. The worst thing you can do is try to lock someone like that down early on, then have them think, there’s so much more out there. I played it cool for a long time.”
5. Ben Stiller & Christine Taylor
Christine Taylor and Ben Stiller have been married for over 16 years and are still going strong. They are the fun-loving parents of two – Ella and Quinlin. In a cover story for Parade magazine, Stiller reveals how the couple wound up together, “[Our] relationship was a gradual thing that happened over a quick period of time, maybe seven or eight months. We just started hanging out with each other and it developed into, “Wow, this feels great. I really like this person. I think I love this person. I really do – I love this person.” It hit me out of the blue.”
4. Kevin Bacon & Kyra Sedgwick
Kevin Bacon and Kyra Sedgwick officially met on the set of “Lemon Sky” in the late 80s. The couple has been married now for over 20 years. Their lasting power is so strong that Redbook magazine revealed the couple’s five relationship tips that keeps their love alive. 1.)Have trust in each other; 2.) Know that there must be time made for each other; 3.) Always take time for yourself; 4.) Make your family a priority; 5.) Be a support system for your spouse.
3. Tom Hanks & Rita Wilson
With 26-plus years of being together, the tabloids went crazy last year when Tom and Rita were reportedly separated for a month. According to an article in the dailymail.co.uk, the story was fabricated. Only they know the truth – and, in fact, the couple was spotted together in Greece a month after all of that gossip nonsense. Sons Truman (18) and Chet (24) are now out of the house and it is likely that empty-nesting took some adjustments. From what we can see, the Hanks-Wilson duo is here to stay and are still in love.
2. Leslie Mann & Judd Apatow
Leslie Mann is possibly the funniest actress on the big screen and she is married to one of the funniest writer/directors in Hollywood – Judd Apatow. It’s clear that they are happy, as they have been married for over 16 years and are still laughing. They met during Mann’s audition for The Cable Guy with Jim Carrey (produced by Apatow). Judd knew she was the one at first sight, according to a report in the dailymail.co.uk. He won her over by making her dinner and taking her to a basketball game. Mann comments, “I tried to cancel on him, but he wouldn’t let me. He made me spaghetti with Ragu sauce from a jar. It was so sweet. That was all he knew how to make. I remember looking at Judd and it hit me.”
1. Matthew McConaughey & Camila Alves
Much like Clooney, Matthew McConaughey was considered quite the Hollywood bachelor. He met Camila in 2006 and they married five years later, after a very long engagement. According to US Weekly magazine the couple married in June 2012 after Camila put the squeeze on her man to take the final step as a couple. They now have three children and McConaughey is said to be an outstanding, hands-on father, according to Camila. McConaughey reveals, “It’s the one thing I’ve always wanted to be. Never is a man more of a man than when he is the father of a newborn.”
