Art imitates life, right? So it seems, considering the number of onscreen romances that turn into real-life love stories. It makes sense, considering the fact that television and movie casting is usually based on chemistry between characters, something that can be hard to ignore, especially when the actors/actresses are placed in an actual love scene (because practice makes perfect). From Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie’s controversial Mr. & Mrs. Smith to the swoon worthy Stewart-Pattinson Twilight matchup (even if that relationship maybe quite possibly was a PR prank), some of the greatest couples have been born from fiction. While not all couples work out (we’re still getting over Seth and Summer breaking up in real life), a majority of them do—which means fairy tales really do come true, right? Although in reality, it must be pretty difficult to maintain a healthy relationship when a) people are hiding in the bushes waiting to snap photos of you and; b) when every tabloid in the country is turning your every interaction with anyone into a potential cheating scandal. So maybe it isn’t so terrible being a regular old person after all—even if that means that you don’t get to fake make out with (insert name of really attractive actor/actress here).
Here are some of the couples that are making it work in the real world:
10 Evan Peters and Emma Roberts
While we do have our doubts regarding the longevity of this young couple (Emma Roberts did get arrested after allegedly attacking Evan Peters in a hotel room in Montreal in 2013), they’re a real thing. The two, who have co-starred in consecutive seasons of American Horror Story (much to the chagrin of the rest of the cast—apparently the young couple spent the entire time either making out or fighting), became engaged in 2014. Either way, at least this young couple is passionate about each other…although we are hoping that they refrain from fist fighting—they are role models, after all. Well, sort of—AHS is sort of for an older crowd, we suppose.
9 Matthew Rhys & Keri Russell
While this pair might play Russian spies on television, their real-life relationship isn’t so secret. The Americans co-stars Keri Russell and Matthew Rhys have been dating since 2014, in case you missed the steamy GQ spread the two shared in February 2014. The truth is, their relationship doesn’t come as that much of a surprise, seeing as how Russell does sort of have a thing for dating her co-stars (umm…Felicity??). The best part: Russell really does slap Rhys around before a scene, which probably explains the tension that runs a tight line throughout the show. The relationship follows Russell’s divorce from ex-husband Shane Deary.
8 Eva Mendes and Ryan Gosling
While we were all quietly still holding out for Rachel McAdams and Ryan Gosling to rekindle their romance (let’s face it—nobody, and we mean, nobody, is over The Notebook), the Drive star went ahead and fell in love with one of his other stunning co-stars. But if it had to be someone, the gorgeous Eva Mendes is a pretty solid choice. The two starred in The Place Beyond the Pines together, and have kept pretty tight-lipped about their relationship, welcoming a baby girl in September 2015. In the past, Mendes vocalised her thoughts on marriage, calling it “old-fashioned,” but it seems that the actress might be changing her tune soon—but that’s what Ryan Gosling does to a girl.
7 Anna Paquin and Stephen Moyer
We will never forget the first time that a pale Bill Compton whispered a guttural “Sookie” into Miss Stackhouse’s ear on HBO’s hit television series, True Blood. While the show wrapped this year after seven seasons, Anna Paquin and Stephen Moyer are—and excuse the vampire cheese factor here—forever. The couple married in 2010, welcoming fraternal twins in 2012. And as for Moyer dealing with all the adventurous sex scenes featuring his darling wife on the show? Not an issue—Moyer has even gone so far as to direct one of the scenes. Now how’s that for progressive?
6 Blake Lively and Ryan Reynolds
For a blockbuster, Green Lantern was kind of a letdown—Ryan Reynolds basically runs around in a ridiculous version of the Green Lantern costume being a douche to everyone (And what was up with the random reckless driving at the beginning of the film?), including onscreen love interest Carol Ferris (played by the luminous Blake Lively). But one of the upsides to the making of the film was the real life coupling of The Age of Adaline star and Reynolds. The really-really-really good-looking couple tied the knot privately in 2012, and welcomed baby girl James in 2015. Which is totally awesome, since Reynolds seems to be in kind of a lull for now.
5 Ginnifer Goodwin and Josh Dallas
This story couldn’t be more perfect. Literally the definition of a fairy tale hook-up (or romancing, as Disney would put it), these two play Snow White and Prince Charming on ABC’s smash series Once Upon a Time. Apparently, Josh Dallas fell for the Big Love star the minute he saw her (ummm…even though he was still married). While they probably don’t live in a castle, and he probably didn’t have to kiss her to wake her up or whatever, these two seem to have found their happy ending—they married in 2014 and welcomed their first child, Oliver, last year.
4 Emily VanCamp and Joshua Bowman
While we’re all rooting for Jack Porter to win Emily Thorne’s heart at the end of the day, we can’t say we weren’t a little disappointed when Emily VanCamp and Josh Bowman’s onscreen romance initially collapsed (he shot her and rendered her sterile, which pretty much ended any possibility for a rekindling). And of course, killing the poor chap off really nicked that love affair in the bud. Luckily, the chemistry between the two Revenge stars was undeniable, so it’s no surprise that The Winter Soldier actress and Bowman (who actually briefly dated the late Amy Winehouse) are actually still going strong in real life.
3 Andrew Garfield and Emma Stone
When Andrew Garfield and Emma Stone were cast together in The Amazing Spider-Man in 2010, they were both entangled in other relationships, but there was no hiding that chemistry. It wasn’t until 2011 that the notoriously private pair reconnected, and since then, they have become one of the most adorable couples in Hollywood—who can forget that time they blasted the paparazzi by posing with PSA announcements calling attention to organizations like WWO? Rumours are swirling that the clever couple may be engaged—fingers crossed (although we’ll probably only find out after they’ve tied the knot, knowing those two).
2 Dax Shepard and Kristen Bell
If you don’t already think that these two are the most adorable couple ever, please just Google “sloth” + “Ellen” + “Kristen Bell.” While these two started off as polar opposites, it seems that Bell has brought the This is Where I Leave You star over from the dark side (Shepard was quite the party boy before meeting Bell). The Hit and Run co-stars, now married with two under two, are definitely one of our favourite couples. While unconventional (Shepard doesn’t wear a wedding ring—instead, he sports a bell tattoo on his wedding finger), their pairing is a true story of how opposites attract—and work, apparently.
1 Mila Kunis and Ashton Kutcher
Timing really must be everything. While the engaged couple didn’t find love during the filming of That 70’s Show (which is probably a good thing seeing as how Mila Kunis was only 14 when she audited for the role of Jackie, with Ashton coming in at six years her senior), the lovebirds finally got together in real life, welcoming their first child this year. Apparently, Kutcher used to help Kunis, who is of Ukrainian descent, with her biology homework. The Two and a Half Men star was also her first kiss (be it on set or not), which was apparently very nerve-wracking, as she had a huge crush on him (he was still that Calvin Klein model back then). Can you say adorable?
