Girl power represent, right? Arguably, comic books just wouldn’t be as popular without the beautiful and powerful women that are in them. Although superheroines weren’t always well-represented in comic books, they are increasingly becoming mainstays and are also getting their own stand-alone films. Superwoman, a feminist icon, hadn’t been portrayed on screen in 70 years - how much of a travesty was that?! Of course, there is still room for improvement. Who wouldn’t love to see even more of these ultra sexy and strong women dazzle on screen?
These actresses have a lot to live up to when it comes to playing powerful superheroines and supervillains on screen - they have to look the part with a body that is fit and toned and have a powerful on-screen presence. It is not an easy feat. Sometimes it works out and sometimes it doesn’t, but even when it doesn’t, these actresses still always look good. We can’t complain about that, right? So, who exactly has been cast to bring to life some of comic book’s sexiest characters? Take a look for yourself.
13 Ellen Page as Kitty Pryde
It made sense for Ellen Page to be cast as Marvel’s Kitty Pryde, a super smart superhero who is basically a genius in the realm of computer science, with strong fighting skills and the ability to walk through walls. Page first portrayed Kitty Pryde in 2006’s X Men: The Last Stand. Page initially said no to the role because she wasn’t ready to jump into the world of Hollywood blockbusters, but after reading the script, she changed her mind. We are glad she did because a lot of people have a thing for Page and were happy to see her in the role.
12 Alicia Silverstone as Barbara Wilson/Batgirl
Tons of men had crushes on Alicia Silverstone back in the day. Although she was a little “clueless” when it came to her role as Batgirl in 1997’s Batman and Robin, she certainly pulled off her tight black suit quite well. We can’t be too hard on Silverstone given that, although she was considered a bad casting choice, everyone else in the film was as well, including the likes of George Clooney who played a terrible Batman (even he agrees). Interestingly, a lot of Batgirl’s scenes weren’t included in the film because Silverstone had put on some weight and she couldn’t fit into her suit. The press had a heyday when that news got out.
11 Kate Bosworth as Lois Lane
Okay, Lois Lane isn’t technically a superhero, but behind every Superman is a “Super woman,” and we think Lois Lane holds her own. The pretty Kate Bosworth took on the role of the witty Lois Lane in 2006’s Superman Returns. But, although she looked good on screen, which is why she is on this list, she was criticized for the role and is considered one of the worst Lois Lanes. This was because she was only 22 at the time, which made the fact that she was an award-winning journalist unbelievable. But she looked good, so we can’t be too upset, right?
10 Jennifer Lawrence as Mystique
Jennifer Lawrence made the perfect candidate to play Marvel’s curvy Mystique, who made her debut in 2011’s X Men: First Class. Lawrence was cast into the role because "she could pull off the challenging dichotomy that Raven faces as she transforms into Mystique; that vulnerability that shields a powerful inner strength." Interestingly, Lawrence did not know if she lived up to Rebecca Romijn’s performance, who Lawrence considers to be “the most gorgeous person in the world.” She also thought that her take on the character was very different. To get ready for the role, Lawrence had to diet, and to hit the gym for two hours every day. It paid off, though.
9 Sarah Michelle Gellar as Buffy Summers
80s kids rejoice. Sarah Michelle Gellar has made the list for playing the iconic “Buffy” in Buffy the Vampire Slayer - a role that is considered one of the greatest characters in the history of television. Although most people probably don’t consider her a traditional superhero, she does have superpowers, like supernatural strength and speed, so we feel she belongs here. Clearly in the dreams of every teenager out there at the time, we have a feeling that a lot of people are going to love seeing their crush on this list. Interestingly, Gellar wasn’t Joss Whedon’s first choice for the role: it was actually Katie Holmes, but she was too young at the time.
8 January Jones as Emma Frost
January Jones snagged the role of one of the hottest female comic book characters out there - none other than the very popular blonde bombshell, Emma Frost, who Jones portrayed in 2011’s X Men: First Class. Jones commented on Emma Frost’s skimpy outfits as being “insane” and that Frost has “quite the bod”, which Jones found to be “intimidating.” Although Jones said she only did a little bit of working out to get ready for the role, she looked great on screen. However, despite the fact that she had the looks to play the part, a lot of people were not happy with her portrayal of a very powerful superhero: her acting was one-dimensional and rather chilly.
7 Malin Akerman as Laurie Juspeczyk /Silk Spectre II
Malin Akerman took the role of DC Comics’ Silk Spectre II in 2009’s Watchmen, showing off her very toned body in her exceptionally small bodysuit and knee high black boots, much to the delight of us all. It is no surprise that Akerman was cast to play the comic book character who came in 24th place on Comic Buyers Guide’s 100 Sexiest Women in Comics list. To play the role of the crime fighter, Akerman said a lot of working out and training was involved. It paid off. This was also an interesting film because it satirized traditional superhero films.
6 Jessica Alba as Sue Storm/The Invisible Woman
5 Zoe Saldana as Gamora
Zoe Saldana took the role of Marvel’s powerful Gamora, an alien, in 2014’s Guardians of the Galaxy and looked fierce while doing it (not to mention taking home a handful of awards) - after all, she is a hot assassin with otherworldly strength and speed. In fact, she is one of Marvel’s best martial artists as well. Saldana had this to say about Gamora: “[she’s] a warrior, she’s an assassin and she’s very lethal, but what saves her is the same thing that can doom her. She has a sense of righteousness. She’s a very righteous individual.” She will reprise her role in 2017.
4 Gal Gadot as Wonder Woman
So, who snagged the coveted role of the warrior princess superherione who is one of the most popular and hottest superheroes ever? None other than the beautiful Gal Gadot. She had a lot to live up to, given that Wonder Woman is such a powerful and strong woman. Although there was some initial hesitation about her in the role given that she didn’t have the traditional Wonder Woman body (who cares?), her performance as Wonder Woman in Batman v Superman was well-received by critics. Some even said she was the best part of the film.
3 Blake Lively as Carol Ferris
Blake Lively most recently portrayed DC Comics’s Carol Ferris in 2011’s Green Lantern. She looked particularly hot in the role, which is probably why she managed to snag Ryan Reynolds for good. Interestingly, Carol Ferris has been both a superhero and a supervillain, which makes her a good girl and a bad girl, if you know what we’re saying. She can fly and can send out a lot of force to take down opponents. Jennifer Garner was also considered for the role. We can overlook the fact that the film didn’t fare well among the critics with a pretty face like Blake Lively in one of the lead roles.
2 Scarlett Johansson as Black Widow
Obviously, Scarlett Johansson is basically a superhero in the flesh - she is smart and sexy. It wasn’t a stretch when she was first cast as one of the most popular superheroes, Marvel’s Black Widow, a Russian spy, in 2010’s Iron Man 2. The casting invoked basically no controversy from fans, which is a rare feat. With her tight, black leather suit, she was sure to make every comic book fan’s dreams come true. Although nothing has been confirmed, there has been talk that Black Widow might actually get to star in her own stand-alone film - the Russo Brothers are very interested in the idea. Some have commented on the fact that this character provides so much to work with in a film, but yet Marvel hasn’t acted on it. Even Mark Ruffalo commented on the lack of Black Widow figurines (er, for his daughter).
1 Elizabeth Olsen as Wanda Maximoff/Scarlet Witch
The gorgeous Elizabeth Olsen, younger sister of the Olsen twins, first portrayed Marvel’s Scarlet Witch in 2014’s Captain America: The Winter Soldier. She plays one of the most powerful superheroes, whose mental powers are out of this world due to the hexes that she can cast. What is more powerful than being able to manipulate reality? On her character, Olsen had to say: "What I love about her is that, in so many superhero films, emotions are kind of negated a bit, but for her everything that someone else could feel—like their weakest moments—she physically goes through that same experience with them, which is pretty cool." To prepare for the role, she did a lot of dancing instead of traditional stunt work.
