The Best Commercials from the 2013 Super Bowl

The Super Bowl is over and the Baltimore Ravens have just won their second title. Joe Flacco proved his value despite his limitations and Ray Lewis just had the best retirement gift ever. Fans will be talking about the 108-yard touchdown return by Jacoby Jones, his amazing catch towards the end of the first half, Beyonce’s halftime show, the Niners almost completing a comeback after being down by 22 points, the power outage early in the second half and, of course, the Super Bowl commercials.

Ever since Apple’s iconic Ridley Scott-directed 1984 Macintosh advertisement, commercials have been part and parcel of Super Bowl lore. People talk about it just as much as they do the game. During the late 80s and early 90s, when there were a lot of routs in the big game, those commercials were practically the only things that saved the day.

Here are some of the best commercials from the 2013 Super Bowl.

15 Budweiser – Brotherhood

This commercial simply tugs at your heart. It shows the charming story of a trainer and the horse he trained for Clydesdale. Budweiser has come a long way since those croaking frogs and instead presented a heartwarming story not usually seen in beer ads.

14 Mercedes Benz – Soul

This is a star-studded commercial that had all the right elements needed for the right impact. It featured Willem Devoe as the devil, the music of the Rolling Stones and an appearance by Usher and, of course, Kate Upton. If only for Upton, the commercial is well worth seeing over and over again. And to think she was not even wearing a sexy bikini outfit. The commercial had an advanced release however, which blunted the surprise factor.

13 Best Buy – Asking Amy

She just finished hosting the Golden Globe Awards with Tina Fey, Amy Poehler certainly scored a touchdown with this ad in which she asked a Best Buy employee a series of awkward and funny questions. Is LTE contagious? Does it make you uncomfortable when I use the word “dongle?” The commercial is simply hilarious.

12 Audi – Prom

The ad features a high school kid without a date to the prom. His confidence shot up because of the posh Audi owned by his dad. He kissed the prom queen. He pissed off the prom king. He gets a black eye but he does not mind because while bruises fade, glory is forever.

11 Doritos – Goat 4 Sale

Weird, odd and certainly funny, the sound of the goat screaming was both unnerving and funny. The animal just would not stop eating until it finishes off all the Doritos on earth.

10 Oreo – Whisper Fight

So which is the best part of an Oreo? It was a relatively simple argument that heated up and escalated into a full melee. But even through it all, everyone was whispering, even the police who came in to break up the fight. They are in a library, so they made a conscious effort to keep their voices down.

9 Got Milk

There are kittens in danger, lions on the prowl and bank robbers on the loose. The Rock ignores them all. After all, what can be more urgent than needing milk for your cereal?

8 Hyundai – Epic Playdate

An adventurous family in a Hyundai deals with a bad tempered and irritable ostrich, a saber toothed tiger and a crazy security guard. All while The Flaming Lips are playing. It seemed like a scene from the 1980s hit movie called “Ferris Bueller’s Day Off.”

7 Wonderful Pistachios – PSY Get Crackin’ (Gangnam Style)

It was a dance craze that hit the world. Everyone, including celebrities, politicians, athletes and statesmen, were doing it. Should it be any wonder that it would be adopted into a television commercial? Psy is shown getting cracking with Wonderful Pistachios while dancing to his overplayed tune called “Gangnam Style.” There have been a lot of viral video memes to this song. The original is the most watched video in the history of YouTube. Maybe after this ad, it will be time to give it a rest. Or else, we might all go nuts.

6 Coca-Cola – Cameras

The commercial had an advanced release but it still was uplifting to watch. The ad shows the goodness and some honest fun as caught by security surveillance cameras around the world. From those people stealing kisses on a loved one to those helping people from out of the blue to those who are simply enjoying seeing a long lost friend. Security cameras are usually used to catch the bad guys. Sometimes, they can also show that there is still a lot of goodness left in this world.

5 Jeep – America Will be Whole Again

This is a beautiful tribute to the men and women in uniform serving around the world. They and their families have made a lot of sacrifices to ensure our freedom and security, sometimes going halfway around the globe to a dangerous country with thankless people that do not exactly welcome their stay. Jeep was able to articulate the love and gratefulness we have for our troops.

4 Ram Trucks – God Made a Farmer

This is one commercial that surely got everyone’s attention. It featured a speech given out in 1978 by Paul Harvey to the National Future Farmers of America. It recognizes the diligence and hard work being done by the farmers as they strive to provide a lot of the materials we take for granted that we need for our everyday life. Ram Trucks made this touching tribute to this tireless sector of our society.

3 Kia – Space Babies

It is one of the hardest and most awkward questions to answer. When your kid asks you where babies come from, how will you reply? Kia will show the way with the Space Babies. It features all kinds of adorable babies that will hopefully satisfy your child’s curiosity in the meantime.

2 Hyundai – Team

It is about standing up to bullies. And the kid got a bunch of unassuming toughies ready to play tackle football against the bullies’ team.

1 Tide – Miracle Stain

He got a Joe Montana stain on his shirt and fans of the Niners from all over the world lined up to see it. Unfortunately, his wife is a Ravens fans. She washed out the stain with Tide while mischievously saying, “Go Ravens!”
