Ten Most Expensive Weddings

A wedding is supposed to be the highlight of a couple’s life.  Expenses may run into the thousands, as you would need to pay for the wedding dress, the clothes of the entourage, invitations, favors, cake, the ring, rental of the place and even the photographer.  But then again, you would not want to spare any expense for this experience that you are supposed to go through only once in a lifetime.  Though for some people, they may experience it twice or even more.

So exactly how much would you pay your dream wedding? On average, a wedding would probably costs around $25,000 to $30,000.  Celebrities, however, are not your average people. Your $30,000 budget for your wedding is probably the amount they would spend for the front cover of their wedding invitation. This may be an exaggeration, but the amount spent by the following for their respective weddings certainly are not:

10 Prince William and Kate Middleton – 29 April 2011

When Prince William proposed to Kate Middleton and promised to make her a princess, he was not kidding. This real-life royal wedding witnessed by more than two billion people probably cost more than $34 million.  A huge chunk of this amount was allotted for security. After all, this is a future king and queen we are talking about, so no expense must be spared.

9 Kris Humphries and Kim Kardashian – 20 August 2011

They may be asking now if the $6 million they had spent for their wedding was worth it, considering that they divorced very soon after. They both are earning tidy sums on their own, as Humphries is a professional basketball player and Kardashian is a reality TV show star. And they certainly used their stardom to the hilt, with Kardashian scoring discounts from companies in return for her endorsement on Twitter.  Kardashian is known for her body, and she adorned it with three tailor-made gowns by Vera Wang, each of which cost around $25,000.  She also wore $10 million worth of jewelry, though most of it was borrowed lest Humphries would have become blue.

8 Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes – 18 November 2006

They wed under a Scientology ceremony, with the Top Gun spending top dollars.  Holmes had said that her childhood crush was not her neighbor across the river named Dawson.  She risked it and admitted her admiration for the Risky Business star, and she got rewarded with a fairy tale wedding in a castle in Italy. The wedding cost around $3.5 million, with a huge part going to the Cartier Dia bands made of platinum and diamond that the two exchanged when they were reciting their vows. Red wine and champagne flowed during the reception. No word yet if the bands were returned when they signed their divorce papers.

7 Francois Henri Pinault and Salma Hayek – 25 April 2009

The Mexican actress who debuted in Antonio Banderas’ Desperado has come a long way. She married a French billionaire in lavish wedding rites costing around $3.5 million.  The guests were treated to an amazing performance by the wedding singer, a guy named Bono from some Irish band called U2.

6 Paul McCartney and Heather Mills – 11 June 2002

McCartney probably thought he could spend a lot of money for this wedding as it would last until death do them part. After all, that was what happened the first time he got married. Sadly, his second marriage did not yield the same result. He drained $3 million for an Irish wedding that featured vegetarian food and fireworks display. Unfortunately, the two have since divorced. To paraphrase his song, his love did not do good.

5 Marc Mezvinsky and Chelsea Clinton – 31 July 2010

What’s $2 million for a former first daughter? An elegantly planned New York wedding saw the Clintons spending $500,000 for the flowers alone, as well as $200,000 for the security detail. They spent on the high side to keep the wedding’s profile low key.

4 Jordan Bratman and Christina Aguilera – 19 November 2005

Jordan Bratman knew he should give what a girl wants. Singer Christina Aguilera married the music executive in a $2 million ceremony in 2005.  Of this amount, $80,000 was allotted for her wedding gown specially made by Christian Lacroix. Sadly, the marriage did not prove to be what the girl needed, as the couple had a rocky relationship. They divorced in 2010.

3 Sir Elton John and David Furnish – 21 December 2005

On December 21, 2005, the United Kingdom legalized same-sex marriage. Sir Elton John did not waste any time and married his beau, David Furnish, on the same day. The wedding cost around $1.75 million, but it was a pittance considering their love for each other. It does not hurt that they are a wealthy couple, so their money would definitely not just go out like a candle in the wind.

2 Jamie Hince and Kate Moss – 1 July 2011

The English waif is done with the heroin chic look as she looked stunning in a tailor-designed wedding gown by Galliano and paired it with Manolo Blahnik shoes. After all, she did not become a model by wearing non-trendy creations by unknown designers. Not to be outdone, her husband also donned designer suits made from Yves Saint Laurent. A Cristal champagne fountain flowed literally for the guests to consume. The wedding, held in England, cost the couple $1.6 million.

1 Michael Douglas and Catherine Zeta Jones – 18 November 2000

Michael Douglas spent around $60,000 for every year of his age gap with his wife, Catherine Zeta Jones. The age difference of 25 years meant he shelled out $1.5 million for their wedding at The Plaza Hotel in the Big Apple. He brought in a 40-member choir from Wales to honor her wife’s roots, and served lobsters, lamb and a 10-tier cake.  Not bad for the actor who won his first Academy Award when Zeta Jones was merely six years old.
