10 Celebs Who Became Unrecognizable After Fame

They say that looks are everything in Hollywood because they are. A celebrity’s look is his or her most important asset because it determines their type and what roles they are considered for. But sometimes, in order to achieve fame, an ordinary person needs to change their look from plain Jane or plain John to superstar. And in order to keep their fame, they have to maintain their look or find a way to look a whole lot hotter.

Here are ten celebs that became unrecognizable after they became famous. Some of these celebs started out looking like ordinary folks, but after they proved their talents, they had to improve their looks. But, some of these celebs just changed their looks as a result of becoming more mature and growing up. When they were very young, they wore too much makeup, used too much hair spray, and even had multiple piercings. And a lot of the time, they wore too little clothing. Several of the celebs on this list changed it up and covered up when they became mothers. Weight is another reason why some of these celebs became unrecognizable. Either a major weight loss or a major weight gain became a major look change.

Either way, you might have thought you knew these celebs, until you realize they used to look like different people entirely.

10 Lady Gaga

9 Adrienne Maloof

Most real housewives are really into plastic surgery, but especially former Real Housewife of Beverly Hills, Adrienne Maloof. She was married to renowned plastic surgeon Dr. Paul Nassif, so she probably didn't have to pay a penny for any of the work she had done, not that she couldn't afford it. And Maloof has had a whole lot of it, including rhinoplasty, Botox injections, facial fillers, and an eyebrow procedure. However, when Adrienne was growing up, her looks were probably the last thing on her mind. Maloof was a nationally ranked junior tennis player. She also went on to play collegiate tennis at the University of New Mexico, whereas you can see from the picture above, she probably got hit in the nose with a few tennis balls.

8 Katy Perry

Before Katy Perry kissed a girl and liked it or she even was Katy Perry, she was Katy Hudson, a blonde Christian artist. Katy was raised by her parents, Pentecostal pastors, Maurice Keith Hudson and Mary Christine Perry in California (of course). In 2001, she released a gospel album, Katy Hudson. It was extremely unsuccessful and reportedly only sold 200 copies, just before the record label dissolved. When Perry dropped the Christian act, she also dropped her innocent blonde girl look as well. However, there was one aspect of her old look that Katy kept, her big, pouty lips.

7 Jonah Hill

While Jonah Hill was famous for starring in Superbad as well as Get Him To Greek, he wasn't truly a household name until Moneyball. Hill’s performance was so incredible that he was nominated for an Oscar for Best Supporting actor. Hill had always been overweight, but he never really did anything about it until his Moneyball co-star Brad Pitt, encouraged him to trim down. Hill reportedly lost 40 lbs (although it looked like a whole lot more than that), thanks to a sushi diet, exercising and giving up beer. Hill stayed slim in 21 Jump Street, but many fans thought he just didn't look like himself. He was almost unrecognizable, but shortly after the film he returned to his pre-fame physique.

6 Snooki

5 Chris Pratt

Okay, Chris Pratt’s looks didn't exactly change when he became famous. They changed when he became super famous. Pratt was famous for his role in the sitcom Parks & Recreation, as Andy Dwyer. He even became a household name for his role on Everwood and as Anna Faris’ husband, but when Pratt was cast as Peter Quill in the action flick Guardians of The Galaxy, his look changed completely. He went from adorable and chubby, to jacked and sexy. Pratt lost 60 pounds of fat and turned it into pure sex symbol muscle. He definitely doesn't look like the same man he was; he looks hotter.

4 Nicole Richie

Before she was married to Joel Madden or the mother of two children, Nicole Richie was known as Paris Hilton’s best friend, when they starred together on six seasons of The Simple Life. Today, Richie is now known for her excellent taste in fashion. She was even on StyleStar and has several clothing and accessory lines. But, her taste in fashion during her Simple Life days was far less simple and a whole lot more wild. But that's not the only reason why Richie looked different. After The Simple Life, Richie lost her long hair extensions and a whole lot of weight. In fact, she looks like a different person entirely.

3 Kylie Jenner

2 Jennifer Grey

Actress Jennifer Grey has one of the most talked about faces of the 80’s. Grey was a rising star for her iconic role in Ferris Bueller’s Day Off and for her Golden Globe nominated performance in Dirty Dancing. But, in the early 1990’s Grey had not one, but two nose jobs (the second one was required to correct the first). Sadly, these procedures left her virtually unrecognizable, as Grey herself had said, “I went in the operating room a celebrity—and came out anonymous. It was like being in a witness protection program or being invisible.”

1 Oprah

Oprah Winfrey is one of the richest and most successful women in the world today, but she came from very humble beginnings. She was born in Mississippi and raised by her grandmother, Hattie Mae (Presley) Lee, in rural poverty. When she was 6, Oprah moved in with her mother. As a teenager, she was sent to live with her father, Vernon. Her life as a child wasn't easy, but Oprah overcame adversity and became a local news anchor and game show host. In the 80’s, Oprah hosted a local talk show in Chicago, which ultimately became arguably the most successful talk show in history, The Oprah Winfrey Show. So, she certainly doesn't look like the poor girl from the south anymore.
