There are lots of different ways people show affection. Some people like to show how much they care by giving their loved one a large bouquet of flowers. Others prefer chocolates and a card with a heartfelt note inside. Some prefer to express their emotions with words, as in the form of a poem. Then there are those who like to show how much someone means to them by getting a tattoo in their honour.
Some people may think that rings are a commitment, but they are nothing compared to tattoos. Rings may be expensive, but they can come off and they do not leave behind any permanent marks. Tattoos are pricey AND there is no slipping them off easily. We’re talking permanent body modification when you get inked. The only way a tattoo is ever going to come off is if you cover it up with something else, or if you undergo multiple painful laser treatment sessions, and even then there can still be a visible mark.
The whole permanent-body-modification thing doesn’t put off celebrities with regular tattoos and it doesn't put them off relationship tattoos, either. Celebrities love to express themselves on stage and screen, but they also like to do it through their body art. These celebrities showed the biggest commitment to their relationship by getting inked. They might have thought that their relationships were going to be forever like their tattoos, but things didn’t work out that way. These 10 celebrity relationship tattoos were not the best decisions.
10 Kaley Cuoco
When Big Bang Theory star Kaley Cuoco got married to professional Tennis player Ryan Sweeting, she got the date of their nuptials tattooed on her back in roman numerals. Ryan also got the same ink on his arm, along with Kaley’s name. After only 21 months of marriage, Kaley and Ryan decided to split up and all she was left with were the memories and the godforsaken tattoo. Even though the ink wasn’t as obvious as having Ryan’s portrait or name tattooed on her back, Kaley still wanted it gone. She covered up the wedding date tat with a butterfly. She also said she would not be tattooing any future wedding dates on her body. Good call.
9 Nick Cannon
8 Mariah Carey
When Mariah Carey was with Nick Cannon, Nick was not the only one to get a tattoo to commemorate their relationship. Mariah also got some ink. Instead of copying Nick’s tat and getting his name across her back, Mariah went with something more diminutive. Mariah opted for an orange butterfly tattoo with “Mrs. Cannon” written down the body on her lower back. There were no doubt a number of factors that contributed to Nick and Mariah’s split, but who knows how Nick felt when he got a massive tattoo in Mariah’s honor and she opted for something very subtle.
7 Heidi Klum
Supermodel and television host Heidi Klum was never shy about expressing her love for her one-time husband Seal, and we have many quotes to prove it. However, it wasn’t all talk and kisses. Heidi also got a large abstract tattoo on her inner right arm of Seal’s name for their fourth wedding anniversary (Seal apparently got a tat in honor of the occasion too). Heidi’s tattoo also featured four stars with her children’s initials. Unfortunately, Seal and Heidi ended their relationship in 2012 after seven years of marriage. Even though most people couldn’t tell that Heidi’s tattoo actually spelt “Seal,” she underwent treatment to have it removed. However, she did keep the stars with her children’s initials. Those little tattoos will definitely be permanent.
A lot of celebrities like to get their partner’s names tattooed on them. Nas went a step beyond that. He decided to get a portrait of then-wife Kelis tattooed on his inner right arm. And the portrait wasn’t just any old portrait. Nas got a tattoo of a topless Kelis. Yup, things got PG-13. Kelis and Nas’s marriage ended and it seems that Nas did not want to wear long sleeves all the time to cover up the ink. Instead, Nas decided to partially cover up the tattoo. He covered up Kelis’s face by eventually replacing it with a lion’s head but kept the original body intact. That’s some rich symbolism he has going on now.
5 Jermaine Dupri
Do you remember when Jermaine Dupri and Janet Jackson were together? The couple was together for around seven years so it was easy to think that they were in it for the long haul. That was probably Jermaine’s thinking when he got a tattoo of Janet. Jermaine opted for a portrait of Janet on the side of body. That tattoo went from above his hip to just below hip nipple. It also wasn’t any old portrait of Janet. It depicted her as the Virgin Mary. It is one relationship tattoo that definitely earns points for originality, however it probably isn’t something that Jermaine considers his best decision now that Janet is married to another man.
4 Iggy Azalea
It is easy to think that when you are in a relationship, it is going to last forever. That is one of the reasons people think it is fine to get couple’s tattoos. That was probably what Iggy Azalea was thinking when she got a tat in honour of then-boyfriend A$AP Rocky. The rapper got “Live, Love, A$AP” tattooed on the side of three of her fingers. When the two went their separate ways, Iggy promptly had a large “X” tattoo added to cross out “A$AP” on her finger. But she eventually tired of the tattoo altogether, and began getting it lasered off long before she became engaged to NBA player Nick Young.
3 Melanie Griffith
2 Johnny Depp
Johnny Depp has a number of tattoos including multiple ones down both of his arms. One of Johnny’s most famous tattoos is the one he got to show his love for then-girlfriend and one-time costar Winona Ryder. Johnny got “Winona Forever” tattooed on his right bicep. It turns out his relationship with Winona wasn’t forever, and neither was his tattoo. Johnny and Winona split up and Johnny erased the last two letters of “Winona” so the new tattoo read “Wino Forever.” Things may not have worked out with the relationship, but Johnny ended up with a new tat that he said was more accurate.
1 Angelina Jolie
It’s one thing to get a tattoo of your significant other’s name on a private body part, such as your stomach or even your butt. It takes things to another level when you get it tattooed on a very visible spot. That is what Angelina Jolie did. Angie got a tattoo of then-husband Billy Bob Thorton’s name on her left bicep above some dragon ink. Angelina and Billy ended up divorcing after three years and Angelina got rid of the ink on her left arm. She has since replaced it with the coordinates of all her children’s birth places.
