Met On Set: Celebrities Who Broke Up Relationships

Making movie magic is a time consuming project.  When your days involve entering a fabricated world pretending to be someone else, there is a certain amount of disconnect with your everyday life and responsabilities.  As you dive into your character and delve deep into their psyche, in your desire to become believable on screen, you become someone else and make decisions accordingly.  That is not to say that cheating on a spouse is acceptable for actors, but it must be considered before judgment is passed.

Apart from this point, the filming process is a drawn-out marathon of creation. The workdays are long and the projects often last months at a time. With a bunch of extremely good looking people, spending hours on end together, working toward a common goal and usually in the guise of another person, it is no wonder romantic sparks occur between artists.  Imagine recreating  a believable on-screen love story with a Hollywood starlet.  Where you spend hour upon hour, sometimes in the nude, staring into each others eyes. embracing and kissing. Temptation can become increasingly difficult to overcome.

Most of the relationships that occur while filming are interesting but not all that controversial. In fact, many people follow these relationships with a fanatical passion.  They place all kinds of names and labels on these couples, combining their names, awarding them with pseudo awards like the cutest, sweetest and sexiest couple, and following every aspect of their couple life, going as far as to create timelines and webpages detected to the relationship itself.

There is one aspect of these on-set romances that often causes heads to turn and controversy. That is when the main characters in the romance are married, or seeing others.  Many people shake their heads and chalk up this to the hollywood lifestyle, but others judge the actors in a negative way for their indiscretions.  What follows is a list of onscreen romances that caused a divorce or separation for those involved.

10 Billy Crudup and Claire Danes

Billy Crudup is best known for his work on Almost Famous and Big Fish but he is also known for breaking up his couple at a rather precarious moment.  In 2003, amidst the hottest summer on record in the UK, Crudup began working on the period piece Stage Beauty with costar Claire Danes.  Danes was already a big star at this time having appeared in several big budget movies and being Angela Chase on My So-Called Life.  Danes and Crudup began a relationship during the sweltering summer and carried it on until 2006, when Danes met her future husband Hugh Dancy on the set of the film Evening.  Without being judgmental, this reversal of fortune was somewhat of a payback for Crudup whose girlfriend when he met Danes in 2003, Mary-Louise Parker, was seven months pregnant  at the time of their rupture.

9 Eddie Cibrian and LeAnn Rimes

The 2009 made for TV movie Northern Lights was where these two met. Cibrian was best known for his work on the television show Sunset Beach  and Rimes known as a Grammy award winning singer.  The movie was filmed mostly in Dawson City, Yukon, which added to the isolation of the actors as the Northern town inly has about 1,300 permanent residents.  With nothing else to do Rimes and Cibrian turned to each other for warmth against the cold Canadian weather. Cibrian had two boys and was married to model Brandi Glanville when he met Rimes.  Rimes was married to dancer Dean Sheremet at the time. ALthough still together their relationship has been wrought with controversy as Cibrian's ex-wife and Rimes have been in a feud since the couple has been together.

8 Tori Spelling and Dean McDermott

Tori Spelling was known for two things early in her career: Beverly Hills 90210 and being media mogul Aaron Spelling’s daughter.  Dean McDermott was probably best known as Constable Renfield Turnbull in the Canadian TV show Due South.   The couple met on the set of the made for TV movie Mind Over Murder, which began filming in 2005.  When they met Spelling was married to playwright Charlie Shanian and McDermott was with Mary Jo Eustace and had one child.

The new couple has been together ever since, have four children and have even taken their love onscreen, with three different reality TV shows.

7 Ryan Phillippe and Abbie Cornish

6 Kenneth Branagh and Helena Bonham Carter

5 James Cameron and Suzy Amis

4 Meg Ryan and Russell Crowe

These two well known stars are said to have had an affair while filming the box-office flop, Proof of Life.  This relationship was as successful as the movie lasting only a little over a year.  The relationship was well documented as Crowe was coming off the wildly successful Gladiator and Ryan having been in the almost as popular You’ve got Mail just two years earlier.  The relationship put an end to the Hollywood marriage of Ryan and Dennis Quaid.

3 Ethan Hawke and Film Extra

When Uma Thurman and Ethan Hawke met on the set of Gattaca  in 1997, there was more than just on-screen chemistry.  They quickly became a couple and were married in 1998.  The couple had two children between 1998 and 2002, during which period Thurman actually left acting to focus on motherhood.  Things were not met to last and while filming the movie Taking Lives in Montreal, Hawke was unfaithful with a 22 year old extra.  Her name was never released and the affair did not last very long, but it led to the breakup of these two generation X power actors.  It is also worth pointing out that Hawke’s opposite is prominent in the top two on this list.  It seems like Angelina Jolie, even if involved indirectly, causes more divorces than anyone else.

2 Billy Bob Thornton and Angelina Jolie

In 1999, on the set on Pushing Tin, Jolie and Thornton met.  This put an end to Thornton and Laura Dern’s engagement and began a relationship that was filled with strange displays of affection.  The couple wore each other’s blood in vials around their necks and tattoos with each others names.  The marriage was to be short lived and three months after having adopted their child the couple was done.  They divorced in 2003.

1 Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie

Brangelina, the name given to this relationship, has been going strong since 2005 when the couple made the movie Mr & Mrs Smith. Although Jolie denied infidelity on the set, she later admitted that she and Pitt had indeed fallen in love during filming.  Along with Johnny Lee Miller, who she met on the set of Hackers, Billy Bob Thornton from Pushing Tin and Jenni Shimizu, from the movie Foxfire, Pitt was to be the fourth in what seemed to be a a line of co-star loves for Jolie.  Although this relationship shows no signs of ending.  The couple now have six children together. The victim of this relationship was Jennifer Aniston, who was with Pitt from 1998 until 2005.
