Stretch marks appear when you suddenly lose or gain weight. Women are particularly vulnerable to getting stretch marks (especially pregnant women) but this doesn’t mean men can’t have them too. They mostly appear on the belly, butt, thighs and arms.
Because of their unsightly nature, stretch marks can reduce your self-confidence so most people try to cover them up. Some cover them up using make up while others find it easier to wear clothes that conceal them.
If you are like most people, it will reach a point where you will want to eventually get rid of them. You can opt to go to a dermatologist who will advise you on the best treatment to rid yourself of the stretch marks. These treatments are not cheap, however, and they don’t always guarantee that they’ll make your marks disappear.
Thankfully, we have done our research and have found that you can reduce the appearance of stretch marks using ingredients that are already in your own home. You can combine most of these treatments in order to achieve maximum results. For example, you can exfoliate and then apply olive oil as a moisturizer.
Caution: You should note that some of the treatments listed here might interfere with any topical treatments you are using, so talk to your doctor before trying any of our suggested treatments. In addition, your skin might react to any one of the ingredients so we recommend you first apply the treatments on the inner part of your elbow and leave it on for 24 hours to see if you’ll get a reaction.
With that said, here are 10 natural ways to get rid of stretch marks:
10 Egg Whites
Egg whites contain amino acids and proteins, two key ingredients necessary for repairing skin cells efficiently. So pamper your skin and give it that smooth, fair appeal with the help of egg whites.
To help minimize the appearance of stretch marks, here’s what you need to do: Clean the part where you want to apply the egg whites, then crack two eggs in a bowl and separate the whites from the yolk. Whip the egg whites with a fork and apply a thick layer of the mixture with a makeup brush or your fingers. Allow the egg whites to dry completely. It should take about ten minutes, then rinse the egg whites from your skin with lukewarm water. Moisturize with olive oil and you can follow this routine every day for optimum results.
9 Lemon Juice
Lemon juice contains citric acid, which naturally helps to reduce the appearance of scars, acne and stretch marks. Here’s what you need to prepare this natural remedy: You can cut a lemon into two halves and rub it on your stretch marks using circular motions. Allow the juice to dry before rinsing off with warm water. Alternatively, you can mix fresh lemon juice and cucumber juice and apply it onto your skin.
Sugar is particularly known for its exfoliating effects. When you exfoliate your skin using sugar, you get rid of dead skin cells, thereby minimizing the appearance of stretch marks on your belly, arms, thighs and butt. So here’s how to use sugar to reduce stretch marks: Thoroughly mix a tablespoon of sugar with a few drops of freshly squeezed lemon juice and almond oil. Rub the mixture on the affected areas for a few minutes every day. Rinse with warm water, pat dry and moisturize with olive oil and make sure you scrub every day for at least a month
7 Aloe Vera
Aloe Vera has been used for many years to treat a variety of skin problems including minimizing the appearance of stretch marks. It efficiently moisturizes the skin without giving it a greasy feel so it’s perfect if you have oily skin. If you use it on a regular basis, you can achieve positive results. So to get started, you need to: Get a few Aloe Vera leaves and squeeze the gel onto the affected area. Rub it onto your skin, and leave it on for 15 minutes, then rinse with warm water. Alternatively, you can add five vitamin E and five vitamin A capsules to the gel and rub the mixture onto your skin until it’s fully absorbed.
6 Castor Oil
Castor oil treats a number of skin issues like pimples, fine lines, dark spots and wrinkles as well as stretch marks. It’s rich in fatty acids and moisturizes the skin fairly quickly. These fatty acids penetrate deep into the skin and encourage the growth of healthy skin tissue. To use castor oil to fade stretch marks you need to: Apply a thick layer of the oil onto your skin and rub for 5 to 10 minutes in circular motions. Wrap the affected area with a plastic wrap and apply heat with a hot water bottle or a heating pad for at least half an hour. Do this every day for at least one month.
5 Potato Juice
Potato juice is loaded with vitamins and minerals that encourage growth and restoration of skin cells. Because of these properties, it’s no surprise that it has been used for eliminating stretch marks. Cut a medium sized potato into thick slices, and rub the slices on your stretch marks for at least five minutes. Allow the starch to dry before rinsing off with warm water.
4 Olive Oil
Olive oil is mostly used for its hydrating and cooling effects. It’s also loaded with plenty of anti-oxidants and essential nutrients necessary for healing a variety of skin problems, including stretch marks. Rub slightly warm extra virgin olive oil on your stretch marks, and let your skin absorb the oil for at least half an hour. Massaging the oil every day helps improve the blood circulation on your skin and reduces the appearance of stretch marks largely.
Alfalfa leaves are rich in amino acids, which contribute to the health of our skin. They're also rich in Vitamin K and E which help tone and nourish our skin. They also have anti-fungal properties, which help to detoxify the skin. To treat stretch marks on the skin you need to: Mix alfalfa powder with chamomile oil to form a smooth past and massage the paste on your stretch marks two or three times a day. Do this for a few weeks and you will start to see the difference.
2 Cocoa Butter
Cocoa butter is an excellent moisturizer and is beneficial in the treatment of stretch marks. Apply cocoa butter on your stretch marks at least two times a day every day for a few months. Alternatively, you can mix a teaspoon each of vitamin E and kernel oil, two teaspoons of grated beeswax, one tablespoon of wheat germ oil and half a cup of cocoa butter. Make sure to melt the beeswax before mixing it in. Apply the mixture on your stretch marks at least two times a day every day. The mixture can be stored in the refrigerator so you can make as much as you want.
Water not only detoxifies your body but it also helps to keep your skin supple and restores its elasticity. Experts recommend that you drink at least 8 glasses of water every day to keep your body hydrated and to keep your skin soft. Try as much as possible to avoid drinking soda, coffee or tea and you should soon start to see your stretch marks disappear.
