Sonia Gandhi or Edvige Antonia Albina Maino is an Italian-Indian, who has now become an integral part of Indian politics. She has a net worth of $2 billion. Her wealth comes from serving as the President of the Indian National Congress since 1998. Her wealth is also family-owned, as she comes from the powerful and rich Nehru-Gandhi gamily of India that has given India several Prime Ministers.
She was born on 9th December 1946. She was married to the former Prime Minister of India, Rajiv Gandhi till he was assassinated in 1991. She was constantly asked by the party leaders to take over the government, but she went on refusing until 1997, and finally, in 1998, she was elected as the President of Congress.
Sonia was born in Lusiana a small village, 30 kilometers away from Vicenza in Veneto, Italy. Her parents were Stefano Maino and Paola Maino. They have been living in the village for generations. Sonia, as an adolescent, stayed at Orbassano and was raised following Roman Catholicism. Around 1964, she went to the Bell Educational Trust to study English where she met Rajiv Gandhi, the son of former Indian Prime Minister Indira Gandhi. Rajiv was studying at Trinity College. The two met for the first time at the Varsity Restaurant. In 1968, Rajiv and Sonia got married.
Since 2004, she has been the chairperson of the United Progressive Alliance in the Lok Sabha (India’s parliament). In the 125 years long history of the Congress Party, she has been the longest-serving President. She has been rated constantly among the “Most Powerful Woman in the World” by the Forbes Magazine. She was ranked 6th in the year 2007. According to Forbes magazine, she is the 9th most powerful person in 2010.
