Considered as South Korea’s wealthiest woman today, Lee Myung-Hee is the current Chairman of the retail giant Shinsegae. She is the daughter of the late Samsung founder Lee Byung-Chul. Lee Myung-Hee’s husband, Chung Jae-Eun, serves as the Shinsegae’s honorary Chairman after the latter has passed his shares to his children in 2006.
Initially, the company was a part of the Samsung Group. Later on, Shinsegae separated from the group together with the Hansol Group, Saehan Group and CJ Group. The group owns the brands E-Mart and Shinsegae. Considered as South Korea’s largest retailer, Shinsegae is in tough competition with Hyundai Department Store Group and Lotte Shopping. Just recently, Shinsegae took over the Seoul Express Bus Terminal with extensive plans for long term development.
