Before getting married in the year 1991, Irina Abramovich was known as Irina Malandrina. Russian newspaper profiles often refer to her as "zolotaya kletka" or the gilded cage which is a reference to her constrained and privileged existence. According to reports, she can speak English well. She had a humble upbringing as her parents waited on tables in Russia. Even if they are Russian, the family is based in London, United Kingdom, where Roman is the owner of the football club Chelsea. Despite the family's wealth, they lived in a hushed existence and often shunned the public spotlight. They traveled in different cars because they wouldn't want to leave their children orphaned in case of an attack. Kroll Inc. became in charge of their security and the company has workers who are also past members of the British Intelligence.

The couple eventually got divorced in Russia with a settlement amounting to $1.26 billion. Aside from this, Roman Abramovich will also cover every expense related to all of their five kids.
