Dorothea Steinbruch amassed most of her net worth from her large stakes in Companhia Siderurgica Nacional (CSN) which is considered as one of the largest steelmakers in Brazil. Previously owned by the state, CSN was founded by Getúlio Varga, the former president of Brazil. In 1993, CSN became a privately held company.

However, Dorothea Steinbruch is not actively involved in running the business. Her son Benjamin currently serves as the chief executive officer and chairman of CSN. She is also a stakeholder in Vicunha Textil which is considered as the world's largest textile manufacturer. She also owns stakes in Banco Fibra which is considered as one of the largest privately controlled sector banks in Brazil in terms of assets. Her other son Ricardo currently serves as the bank's Chairman of the Board.
