Debra Jane Sivyer Fields was born on September 18, 1956 in Oakland, California, United States. She is an alumna of Foothill College. Her first marriage was to Randy Fields whom she married at age 19. The couple divorced in 1997 and they have five children named McKenzie, Ashley, Jennifer, Jenessa and Jessica. At age 13, Debbi Fields worked as one of the ball girls for the Oakland Athletics team. The ball girls are tasked to sit on foul territory and pick grounded ball fouled by the player. By that time, she was earning five dollars for an hour of work. All she earned from the job was used to purchase ingredients which she would later use in making cookies.

In 1977, her business started and through time, it grew into more than 650 retail bakeries across the United States and more than 80 stores set in 11 countries. In 1990, she allowed franchising. In the early 1990's, she sold her business though she remained as its spokesperson.
