Catering for every pocket, Cornwall-based Helston Garages sells a wide range of cars from its 29 dealerships in the southwest. The group was founded by David Carr’s father, who bought a filling station and repair workshop in 1960. Carr, 73, bought out his father in 1975 after completing his apprenticeship and working as a mechanic. The business, owned by Carr, his wife Betty, 70, and their family trusts, made a £5.9m profit on £278m sales in 2009. With a solid balance sheet and net assets of £32.6m, it is worth about £45m. Past salaries and dividends raise the family to £48m.
