Sam Barnett is a part scientist and part mathematician who began his quant hedge fund called Struq while he was still a CalTech undergrad in the year 2008. It offers retailers carefully targeted, personalized adverts on the web. In 2009, turnover was just $633,000 but it eventually rose to $7.6 million in the year.
He became the company's sole shareholder and it has since grown it into a $115 million firm with 15 employees. Returns have been solid.
