He graduated with a degree in computer science at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign in 1997. He then co-founded, NetMeridian Software and SponsorNet New Media, two companies that made Internet tools.
Along with Bernard Powers and Peter Thiel, Levchin founded Fieldlink in 1998. They changed the name to Confinity and later, they developed it into a popular payment product known as PayPal. It was renamed PayPal Inc. after it was merged with X.com. In February 2002, PayPal went public. A year later, it was acquired by eBay for $1.5 million.
Max Levchin founded Slide, a personal media-sharing service for social networking sites like MySpace and Facebook, in 2004. It was later sold to Google in August 2010 for $182 million. On August 25, 2010, he joined Google as their Vice President of Engineering. It was announced on August 25, 2011 that Google would shut down Slide and he will be leaving the company.
