American entrepreneur, hedge fund manager, libertarian and venture capitalist, Peter Andreas Thiel, has an estimated net worth of $2.5 billion.
Thiel co-founded PayPal in 1998, sold it to eBay in 2002 for $1.5 billion, personally netting $60 million. After the company's sale, he founded Clarium Capital, a global macro hedge fund, in 2002 in San Francisco.
He also co-founded Palantir, a CIA-backed big data analysis startup company, in 2004. He continues to serve as its chairman and the company is valued at $20 billion. His estimated 10% stake in Palantir accounts for more than two-thirds of his net worth.
Peter Thiel is an early investor in Facebook in 2004. He was the first big investor in the company with $500,000. He has sold most of his stake in the social network but still sits on the company's board.
He opened hedge fund Clarium Capital in New York in 2005 but recently moved operations back to California reportedly because the firm was facing losses. The firm's assets, once as high as $6 billion in mid-2008, have fallen to just $460 million (a quarter of that is Thiel's money).
Peter Andreas Thiel was born on October 11, 1967 in Frankfurt, West Germany. The family migrated to the United States and lived in Cleveland until 1977 when they moved California and finally settled in Foster City.
