Mrs. Earnhardt was the head of Dale Earnhardt, Inc. (DEI) during four Busch Series championships in 1988, 1989, 2004 and 2005 as well as two Craftsman Truck Series championships in 1996 and 1997. As a team owner, her first Daytona 500 win came in 2001, wherein the #15 Chevrolet driven by Michael Waltrip won. Tragically, this was the same race where her late husband was killed during the final lap.

After the death of her husband, several sponsors such as Budweiser and US Army withdrew their funding for the team. This led to the merging of DEI with Chip Ganassi racing, which formed the Earnhardt Ganassi Racing. The team won the Daytona 500 with Jamie McMurray in 2010.

In 2006, Teresa Earnhardt hired entertainment executive Max Siegel as President of Global Operations to help DEI expand into the entertainment industry. On July 25, 2007, DEI merged with Ginn Racing and Bobby Ginn gained a part in the ownership of the company.
