Nowadays, Bertrams is the United Kingdom's second largest books wholesaler. The founders of this company were Elsie and Kip Bertram. It is based on a business that Elsie ran since 1965 inside a chicken shed found at the garden of her home in Norwich. Until now, the company still has independent booksellers as its core customers.

In the year 2007, the Woolworths Group brought Bertrams. On March 20, 2009, Bertrams was bought in a "pre-pack" deal by the Smiths News which is now the Connect Group. Kip and his family has an estimated net worth of $134.84 million.
