William "Bill" Conway was born in 1949 in McLean, Virginia, U.S. After completing his bachelor's degree from Dartmouth College, he attended the University of Chicago Booth School of Business to complete his Masters of Business Administration.

William Conway started his professional career by working for the First National Bank of Chicago. He served various positions in general management, workout loans, commercial lending and corporate finance. From 1981 through 1986, he served various positions in MCI Communications until he was named as chief financial officer and senior vice president in 1984. Along with Daniel D'Aniello and David Rubenstein, he co-founded The Carlyle Group in 1987.

Eventually, he served as the Vice Chairman of the United Defense Industries and Nextel Communications. Currently based in McLean Virginia, Bill Conway is married and has one child.
