After graduating from Harvard College, he started working at L.F. Rothschild as an analyst. Starting in 1966, he worked for First National Bank of Boston for 8 long years until he served the position as Vice President.

In 1974, he founded Thomas H. Lee Partners (THL), which is considered as one of the largest and oldest private equity firms in the world today. He currently serves as Lee Equity Partners' managing partner. Lee Equity Partners is a private equity firm which he founded in 2006.

During its early years, THL purchased Sterling Jewelers for only $28 million. Two years after, Lee sold Sterling Jewelers for $210 million, earning him a profit amounting to $180 million. In 1992, the firm acquired Snapple Beverages and after two years, he sold it to Quaker Oats for a staggering amount of $1.7 billion. Reports claimed that Lee and his investors earned around $900 million for that particular deal.
