After finishing his degree in Geology at Oklahoma A&M, T. Boone Pickens was immediately hired by Phillips Petroleum and worked for the company until 1954. Two years later, he founded Mesa Petroleum which developed into one of the world's largest independently-owned oil companies. Subsequently, Mesa acquired Hugoton Production  which was considered as 30 times larger than Mesa that time. In 1980's, he was known for his takeovers and attempts to buyout companies like Gulf Oil, Unocal, Phillips Petroleum, Cities Service, Newmont Mining, Koito Mfg., Ltd and Diamond Shamrock. In 1996, Mesa was sold to Richard Rainwater which led to the merging of Parker & Parsley Petroleum a year later. This resulted in the creation of Pioneer Natural Resources.

On the same year, he founded BP Capital Management which ran two hedge funds, Capital Equity and Capital Commodity. Owning 46% of the company's shares, BP Capital Management invests on projects associated with traditional energy companies like natural gas and oil, as well as nuclear power corporations such as Shaw Group, Halliburton and Schlumberger.

T. Boone Pickens was born on May 22, 1928 in Holdenville, Oklahoma. After three unsuccessful marriages, he finally settled with Madeleine A. Pickens.
