Born on November 30, 1950 in Hisar, Haryana, India, Chandra earned his estimated net worth of $3.9 billion with his shares in Zee Entertainment, an Indian television broadcaster, which he founded in 1992 as the first satellite television station in the country. It later became the first private news channel called Zee News and is run by his son Punit. Currently, it claims to reach 650 million views in 168 countries through 32 channels. He now aims to reach one billion viewers.

Chandra’s shares in Zee have boosted with last year’s conversion of cable television to digital. Dish TV, the group’s direct-to-home arm has launched a price war against rivals by offering 70 channels free to its subscribers in four cities. Naveen, the son of fellow billionaire Savitri Jindal, accused the company of extortion by demanding advertising for favorable coverage. Two directors were arrested while Chandra was questioned. The media company denied the allegation.

Last year, Subhash Chandra bought around 10% in IVRCL, a listed in infrastructure firm which led to speculation about a hostile takeover. He later backed out by selling most of the stake in October. He practices Vipassana, a Buddhist meditation technique, and believes that the key to happiness is to take success in your stride and not to be depressed when you fail.
