Prior to his death, Roberto González Barrera seated as the Chairman of the Board and founder of Gruma which is considered as the world's largest producer of corn flour and tortillas. He runs brands like Maseca, Guerrero and Mission. This named him as the "King of Tortillas". He was also the Chairman of Banorte, the largest private bank owned by a Mexican in Mexico. Once considered as one of the most successful state-owned banks, Banorte is one of the major sources of Roberto González Barrera's wealth.

Roberto González Barrera was survived by his wife and two children when he died on August 25, 2012 in Houston Texas due to cancer complications.
