Born Robert Earl Holding on November 29, 1926 in Salt Lake City, Utah, he graduated from the University of Utah with a degree in civil engineering.
Holding began working in 1952 on the first Little America west of Rock Springs, Wyoming. He and his wife started the Little America in Cheyenne, Wyoming in 1965. A year later, the construction was completed. Considered one of America’s most successful entrepreneurs, he is the owner of several entities that included the oil company Sinclair Oil that he bought in 2012, the Grand America Hotel, the San Diego Westgate Hotel, Little America Hotels, and two ski resorts – one in Sun Valley, Idaho that he paid for $12 million, and the other in Snowbasin, Utah. He died on April 19, 2013 at the age of 86 due to complications after the 2002 stroke. He was considered to be one of the largest landowners in America with an approximate 400,000 acres across the west. He has also invested a large sum of money in a cattle ranch land.
