Born Robert Earl Holding on November 29, 1926 in Salt Lake City, Utah, he graduated from the University of Utah with a degree in civil engineering.

Holding began working in 1952 on the first Little America west of Rock Springs, Wyoming. He and his wife started the Little America in Cheyenne, Wyoming in 1965. A year later, the construction was completed.
