Robert Bass is an American businessman and philanthropist who has an estimated net worth of $5 billion. He has amassed his wealth mainly because of his oil business and other investments. He was born to a wealthy family in Texas. His father was an investor, philanthropist and sailor. He graduated from Yale University with a bachelor of arts degree while he earned his master in business administration from the Stanford Graduate School of Business.

Bass and his brothers inherited $2.8 million each from their oil tycoon uncle Sid Richardson. He began his business career when he became part of the Bass Brothers Enterprises. However, he decided to put up his own personal investment company, Robert M. Bass Group, which was later known as Keystone Inc.

In 1994, Robert Bass initiated the development the private jet start-up Aerion Corporation, an aerospace firm based in Reno, Nevada. He currently serves as the Chairman of the Board of the company that works with Airbus to build a supersonic business jet. Aside from from this, Bass has helped launch a half dozen investment shops including his Oak Hill Advisors.

Through the years, Robert Bass has continued with his family's tradition together with his wife Anne. He has given $50 million each to Duke and Stanford (where he served as chairman of its board of trustees).
