A year after, Scaife sat on several corporate boards after his father passed away unexpectedly. He also became involved with his family’s many philanthropic organizations. When his mother died in 1972, he inherited a good part of the Mellon fortune. A portion of it was placed in trust funds and the rest were given in foundations. He and his sister became estranged a year after and he ended up having the primary control of the family foundations and funds.

Scaife started the small market newspaper the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review. It is known for openly skewing towards the right and it has never really turned a profit. He also owns a small take at the conservative magazine and website, NewsMax Media, and the KQV radio based in Pittsburgh. During the 2012 election, he donated at least $500,000 to conservative causes.
