Li Lu was born on April 6, 1966 in Tangshan, China. He went to Nanjing University where he initially studied Physics but later took economics. Eventually, he left China to study at Columbia University where he received his BA, MBA and JD degrees in economics in 1996. Inspired by Warren Buffett, he founded Himalaya Capital Management in 1997. He then managed a venture capital fund and hedge fund from 1998 through 2004.

In 2004, he developed his firm into LL Investment Partners, LP, a company that focuses on global investment opportunities. Charlie Munger and Warren Buffett of Berkshire Hathaway were among the investors to his firm.

In the past, he was rumored to replace Warren Buffett who manages a large portion of the investment portfolio of Berkshire Hathaway, when the latter steps down. He chose to stay with his own firm.
