Farkas was a presidential hopeful during the 2009 presidential election. On December 5, 2008, he announced that he decided not to run. As a philanthropist, he has appeared in the telethon, a fundraising campaign for handicapped children. He has donated hundreds of millions of pesos to charities. In 2008, he donated an approximate $2 million, making him the first individual to donate such an amount in the campaign. However, it was matched several hours later by Jose Luis Nazar in the same campaign. He also donated a $10,000 check during the rescue operation of the trapped miners in Copiapo, Chile. He was involved in a lawsuit by his Australian partners, Admirality Resources, in 2010. It is about him using the company funds inappropriately for personal charity acts.
