Most of his fortune is derived from Aldi, a discount supermarket chain which he co-founded with his brother Theo. According to Forbes, Albrecht is Europe's fourth richest person while in Germany, he is considered as the wealthiest businessman.

Aldi is a giant supermarket chain that operates in nine countries. It has 46oo stores, 1200 of which are found in 32 U.S. states. It was in 1961 when the first Aldi supermarket was opened. In 1994, he got out of Aldi's daily operation and began serving as the Chairman of the Board. In 2013, none of Albrecht's family members run Aldi.

Karl Albrecht is known to be secretive of his family life. Forbes reported that he is married with two children. However, his children did not take part in the family business.
