Jean Paul Getty or J. Paul Getty was born on December 15, 1892 in Minneapolis, Minnesota. He attended the University of Southern California then the University of California, Berkeley but graduated from Magdalen College, Oxford in 1914 with degrees in economics and political science. His father, George Getty, ran a petroleum business in Oklahoma where he worked during the summer and in between studies.
Mr. Getty ran his own oil business right after graduation and made a name for himself in 1916 when he made his first million dollars. During the 1950’s, he moved to England where he continued to operate Getty Oil as well as his other business interests. By 1957, he was named the richest living American. In 1966, he was named the world’s richest private citizen with an estimated net worth of $1.2 billion.
J. Paul Getty is a great lover of art and antiquities. With his collections, he formed the J. Paul Getty Museum in Los Angeles, California. More than $661 million or an approximate of $2.7 billion as of 2012 of his estate was left to the museum after his death on June 6, 1976. In 1953, he established the J. Paul Getty Trust which became the world’s wealthiest art institution. It also operates the J.
