John Gokongwei Jr. is a Chinese-Filipino businessman and philanthropist who has an estimated net worth of $5.5 billion. He is one of the richest persons in the Philippines, along with Lucio Tan and Henry Sy.

John L. Gokongwei Jr. was born on August 11, 1926 in Xiamen, Republic of China to John Gokongwei Sr. and Juanita Márquez Lim, a wealthy Cebu-based family, originally from China's Fujian province.. He obtained his basic education, both primary and high school, from University of San Carlos. He also attended De La Salle University where he earned his MBA.

Gokongwei is the founder of JG Summit, a conglomerate with interests in telecommunications, financial services, petrochemicals, power generation, aviation, hotels, real estate, food, beverage, and livestock farming. The Group's budget carrier Cebu Air went public in October 2010 and raised $623 million. In the same year, it became the Philippines' largest airline based on number of passengers flown on domestic and international routes. It is currently headed by his only son, Lance Gokongwei. Lance also serves as the chief executive officer while his brother, James Go is the chairman of JG Summit.

John Gokongwei Jr. also started a cornstarch plant, which has grown into Universal Robina Corporation, one of the country's largest food and beverage companies. Robina, his eldest daughter, is the president of the family's Robinson Retail Holdings, Philippines' second largest multi-format retailer. His other daughter, Lisa, is in-charge of running Summit Media.
