Jeronimo Arango, together with his younger brothers, Placido and Manuel, were known to be the wealthiest people in Mexico for a very long time. He is one of the co-founders of Aurrera discount stores which is part of the family-owned Grupo CIFRA. Aside from Aurrera discount stores, Grupo CIFRA also encompasses Superama stores, VIPs and El Porton restaurants and suburbia fashion stores.

His partnership with Sam Walton in 1991 has brought Wal-Mart stores to Mexico. The event was the starting point of expansion of Wal-Mart retail stores in Mexico under the name Walmex. In 1997, the Arango family decided to sell their CIFRA shares to Wal-Mart for $2 billion.
