Loria on November 20, 1940 in Manhattan, New York, he attended Stuyvesant High School in New York City where he played baseball as all-city middle infielder. He also attended Yale University for a pre-med course then took history classes and chose art history. In 1965, Loria opened his private art dealing business, Jeffrey H. Loria, at the age of 24. It was situated in the Upper East Side of Manhattan. He also wrote the book Collecting Original Art. His specialization is the 20th century masters with collections such as Pablo Picasso and Henry Moore. In 1968, he graduated from Columbia Business School. In the same year, he also published his second book What’s It All About Charlie Brown? which was co-written with Pat K. Lynch. The book takes a look at the life through the Peanuts comic strip.

Jeffrey Loria has been a lifelong fan of baseball, specifically of the New York Yankees. He once attempted to buy a major league team in the 80's but failed when he made a bid for the Texas Rangers. In 1989, he bought the Oklahoma City 89ers together with actor Bill Murray and Marvin Goldklang at the price $4.3 million. He now owns the Miami Marlins.
