Jassim, along with his six other siblings, inherited the Kharafi Group, one of the biggest holding companies in the Middle East, from their father Mohammed. However, he is more interested in politics than in business unlike his brother Nasser who ran the family business until his death in April 2011. His brother Fawzi took over the group which has major stakes in several Kuwaiti companies such as the National bank of Kuwait and Zain, a telecommunication company. He used to serve as the director of the group before he was elected into the National Assembly in 1975.

Jassim Al-Kharafi served as the speaker of the National Assembly for thirteen years between 1999 and 2011. On October 7, 2011, he was given the Honoris Causa title by the University of Tirana. He is a graduate of business administration at the Manchester Trade Faculty in Kuwait.
