Most of his net worth is derived from oil and gas when the Russian industry was privatized. As of September 2012, Forbes estimated Shvidler's net worth to be around $1.25 billion. Six months later, his net worth increased to $1.3 billion.

Evgeny Markovich Shvidler was born on March 23, 1964 in Ufa Russia. After studying at  Gubkin Institute of Petrochemicals and Natural Gas with a degree in Mathematics, Eugene Shvidler completed his MBA at Fordham University. Shvidler is currently married with five children.

After graduation, he started working for New York-based Deloitte & Touche. Eventually, he returned to Russia and partnered with Roman Abramovich to form Runicom S.A. After their successful partnership in 1995, they took over oil giant Sibneft and Shvidler became the senior vice president of the company. In 1998, he became the president, a position he served until October 2005 when the company was acquired by Gazprom. Currently, he serves as the Chairman of the board of Millhouse, LLC. He currently owns France-based Château Thénac vineyard, a $37-million home in Belgravia, London, a yacht named Le Grand Bleu, and a $14.5-million worth of home in Aspen.
