When he was five, his father entered the real estate business and started buying properties in South Florida using the proceeds from the family’s Boston shoemaking business. Today, he maintains substantial commercial real estate holdings in the southern Florida and Indianapolis areas.

In 1962, his father joined in the media game and eventually earned a license for WVSN-TV in Miami that he bought at $3.4 million. Edmund became the executive vice president and later own the co-owner of the television station that operates as a Fox affiliate. It pioneered the “if it bleeds, it leads” style of television journalism as it focused on crime and consumer interest stories. Such approach was also applied in the Boston market where he currently operates NBC and CW affiliate stations. Sunbeam filed a suit against ratings company Nielsen alleging anti-trust violations but a federal judge in Florida threw it out in January 2011.
