Edward Neville Isdell was born on June 8, 1944 in Downpatrick, United Kingdom. He is a graduate of the University of Cape Town where he completed his Bachelor's Degree in Social Science. Eventually, he attended Harvard Business School to take its Management Development program.

It was in 1966 when he joined The Coca Cola Company. Six years later, he became the General of Africa's largest Coca Cola bottler, the Coca Cola Bottling of Johannesburg. In 1980, he became Australia's region manager. A year later, he was named as the President of the joint venture between San Miguel Corporation in the Philippines and The Coca Cola Company. In 1985, he became the Central European Division's president in Germany.

After having been appointed as senior vice president of the company, Isdell started working as Northeast Europe/Africa Group's president.
