Babis earned his $3.5 billion fortune as the current owner and director of agrochemical holding Agrofert. He started his career as a fertilizer trader for Petrimex. He later became the director of the trade group that imported all raw materials required for the production of fertilizers. In 1995, he founded Agrofert, the chemical, agricultural, and food product holding. He then expanded the firm across Eastern Europe and now in Germany upon the purchase of bakery group Lieken. Agrofert has more than 200 firms which lease most of the agricultural land in the country. It also has interests in companies in wood processing, media, and healthcare.

Babis took control of the company management using an old-fashioned paper calendar instead of a PC. In January, he announced that he would step back and even considered a possible initial public offering. While doing business, he is also active in politics just like his fellow Czech billionaire Zdenek Bakala. He launched a new political party, ANO 2011 to tackle what he sees as the country’s widespread corruption.

Andrej Babiš was born on September 2, 1954 in Bratislava, Czechoslovakia. He has four children; two from his former wife, two from his current relationship with Monika Babišová. From January 2014 to May 2017, he served as Czech Republic's Finance Minister and Deputy Prime Minister during Prime Minister Bohuslav Sobotka's term.
