Babis earned his $3.5 billion fortune as the current owner and director of agrochemical holding Agrofert. He started his career as a fertilizer trader for Petrimex. He later became the director of the trade group that imported all raw materials required for the production of fertilizers. In 1995, he founded Agrofert, the chemical, agricultural, and food product holding. He then expanded the firm across Eastern Europe and now in Germany upon the purchase of bakery group Lieken. Agrofert has more than 200 firms which lease most of the agricultural land in the country. It also has interests in companies in wood processing, media, and healthcare.

Babis took control of the company management using an old-fashioned paper calendar instead of a PC. In January, he announced that he would step back and even considered a possible initial public offering.
