Bruce Karsh is an American lawyer and investor with an estimated net worth of $1.6 billion as of March 2013 according to Forbes. He is the 328th richest person in the “Forbes 400” list and the 922nd person in the list of World Billionaires. He began his career as an apartelle clerk to Supreme Court of the United States justice Anthony M. Kennedy. He also worked as an attorney with the law firm O’Melveny & Myers and as an assistant to billionaire Eli Broad whose insurance company became a client of TCW Group. He was hired by Howard Marks to manage distressed debt at the company.

Together with Howard Marks and four other employees at TCW, Karsh left the firm in April 1995 and founded the Oaktree Capital Management. He was an active firm and portfolio manager for its distressed debt funds as well as the head of the Distressed Debt Team. In 2007, 16% of Oaktree was previously sold to a private Goldman Sachs exchange. It was taken public in April 2012. The firm is the largest equity owner of the Tribune where he was elected chairman.

Bruce Karsh has personally paid $56 million in the recent months to buy the Ritz-Carlton hotel in Clayton, Missouri. He also spent $30 million for the building of the world headquarters of Fender Musical Instrument Corp. in North Scottsdale, Arizona. He is a minority investor in the Golden State Warriors basketball team.
