At a young age, Diane Gilman had already envisioned a career in fashion. She used to design the outfits for her dolls when she was young. At age 10, she started working in a fashion boutique as a stock girl. After studying in university, she opened her first boutique on Melrose Avenue and one of her earliest clients was Cher. Eventually, she started dressing Janis Joplin, Jimmy Hendrix and Jefferson Airplane. Shortly, she moved to New York to pursue her career in fashion designing.

In the 1960, she was recognized as one of the top designers of jackets and denim pants for rock stars. In 2012, she was considered as one of the most popular sellers on the Home Shopping Network. She is known to design dresses, jeans, tops and shorts which are inspired by "Baby Boomer" women.
