Fashion retailer Republic started life as a single shop selling menswear in Leeds. Today, though still based in the city, it has 100 stores across Britain and an e-commerce site. It appeals mainly to the 16-25 age bracket, with brands such as G-Star, Bench, and Henleys. A private equity buyer backed a management buyout in 2005 that valued the firm at £105m. In June 2010, private equity group TPG bought Republic in a £300m deal. Brewins, 46, a co-founder of the business with Tim Whitworth (qv), had 23% of the equity. Carl Brewins is staying with the business as an investor with a net worth of $90 million.
