Mr. Stewart got the skills as a talent manager and this was quickly noticed by Antonio “L.A.” Reid, who, at that time, was just starting the company, Hitco Music Publishing. With his excellent eye for talent, Shakir has signed Beyonce while he was at the company. He was appointed A&R consultant in 2009 at LaFace Records and has signed Ciara to the label where he stayed until 2004

After that, Shakir served as vice president and then senior vice president of A&R for Def Jam where he signed Atlanta rapper Young Jeezy and Miami rapper Rick Ross. In June 2008, he was appointed as Executive Vice President of the label after he replaced Jay-Z in the position which was vacant since December 2007.

Aside from discovering talents, Shakir Stewart was responsible of several projects, as the Def Jam VP of A&R, including Nas, LL Cool J and Brutha. On November 1, 2008, he was found with a gunshot in the bathroom of his home. He was later pronounced dead at a nearby hospital.
