Born Sylvester Stewart on March 15, 1943 in Denton, Texas, Stone has a brother Fred, and 3 sisters Vaetta, Rose and Loretta. They were raised as a part of a family that encouraged musical expression, which led him to master various musical instruments at an early age. He formed The Stewart Four along with his brother and two sisters when they were still children and performed gospel music. Together with his brother, he also formed several groups, among them the Stewart Brothers.
Stone worked for the KSOL radio station as a DJ in the mid-sixties. Also, he worked for Autumn Records as a producer. Among the big names that he produced for include Bobby Freeman, and the Beau Brummels among many others. He also teamed up with Stoners Band former trumpet player, Cynthia Robinson, in forming the Sly and the Family Stone group.
Sly Stone is best known as the frontman for Sly and the Family Stone, a band that played a critical role in the development of various music genre, including soul, funk, rock, and psychedelia during the 1960s and 1970s. His daughter, Novena Carmel, takes after him, and also works as a recording artist.
