Robbie Montgomery was born in St. Louis, Missouri. She attended Pruitt High School. She has two children named James and Andre (now deceased). It was in 1954 when her professional singer career started. She became a part of the group Chordrettes, which was later called Rhythmettes, then Ardrettes. In the past, she had been the backup singer for artists like Stevie Wonder, James Brown, The Supremes and Tina Turner.

When her lungs collapsed and diagnosed with asthma, she was forced to leave her music career behind. She opened "Sweetie Pie's", a restaurant based in St. Missouri. The restaurant specializes in offering family soul food recipes for decades now.

In October 2011, "Sweetie Pie's" began to air on Oprah Winfrey Network. The show featured Robbie Montgomery and her son, Tim, who happens to be her business partner also.
