New Edition became a wildly popular group in the late 80's and continued for twenty five years. In the mid-1980's, Brown left the group and replaced by Johnny Gill. It has recorded the Heartbreak album until Bell was given a chance to be a solo artist. However, he formed Bell Biv DeVoe with Michael and Ronnie. The spin-off group went on to become one of the most popular acts of the 90's and the pioneer of what became known as the “New Jack Swing” sound. The group’s first album, Poison, was released in 1990 and went Platinum four times while their follow-up went Gold. Together, they continued to perform but since 2001, they have not released addition album.

As a member of the New Edition group, Ricky Bell was the recipient of the Golden Note Award in 2008 at the ASCAP’s 21st Annual Rhythm & Soul Music Awards. In the same year, it was the celebration of the 25th Anniversary of the group. Currently, he is touring with Bell Biv DeVoe in several R&B music tours. He is also working on a solo cd and BBD cd.
