Burns rose to fame when he founded the band Dead or Alive in 1980. He was the vocalist and songwriter for the band, which rose to mainstream success in 1985 with their hit single You Spin Me Around (Like a Record). During his career as a band singer, he also worked at a Liverpool record shop called Probe Records, which was also a meeting place for local musicians. He has performed with the short-lived Mystery Girls and a proto-Goth group Nightmares in Wax, which eventually became Dead or Alive.

Burns is known for his androgynous image. Though the group's lineup has changed, Pete had stayed. The group is currently regularly tours, and continues to release music.

Burns had disappeared from the spotlight during the 90s, but emerged again as part of Celebrity Big Brother in 2006. During his time on the show, he was met with much controversy, but he still finished fifth place after receiving 13.6% of the final vote. He also appeared on Celebrity Wife Swap, and had his own show, Pete’s P.A.

Pete Burns also had a solo career, and released a single with Glam called Sex Drive in 1994. He released a Pet Shop Boys-produced song called Jack & Jill Party in 2004. His solo single Never Marry an Icon, produced and co-written by The Dirty Disco, was released on the iTunes Store on September 7, 2010.

Burns was married to Lynn Corlett until 2006, when he divorced her. On February 9 of the same year, he announced his engagement to his partner, Michael Simpson, and the two got married in a civil ceremony on July 6. The relationship ended after ten months, with Pete stating that it is better to be married to a woman. He and Simpson eventually reunited.
