Elliott attended King Edward VII School. In November 1977, he met Pete Willis of the Atomic Mass band after missing a bus. He soon became a member of the band as a vocalist. He suggested changing the name to Deaf Leopard and the group agreed. It was then changed to Def Leppard to distinguish them from contemporary punk bands. He became an integral part of the band while also contributing his songwriting skills.

As a songwriter, Joe Elliot has drawn from his eclectic tastes in music, ranging from pop-rock to folk, as sources of inspiration. He also makes comments that the lyrics of the band’s music are almost never personal. They are meant to be easily accessible to the listener. Elliot also plays guitar and drums as well as piano and electric keyboard. He currently hosts a radio show on planetrock.com on Saturday nights.
