Born in New York in the year 1941, Joan Baez took a keen interest in music from a very young age. One of her earliest performance was in 1957 at a California retreat for a youth group. She spent her days performing at various coffee houses in Cambridge and Boston and her first shot at fame happened in the year 1959 when she played at the Newport Folk Festival. Joan Baez's recording career took off in the year 1960 with success coming from her very first three albums which were, Joan Baez, the second album being, Joan Baez Volume 2 and her third album, Joan Baez Concerts, all of which received gold record status. Some of her most popular songs over the years were, “Diamonds and Rust”, “Farewell Angelina”, “Joe Hill”, “We shall overcome” and “Love is just a four-letter word”.
Her performances at Woodstock 1969 were highly lauded and helped bring the songs written by Bob Dylan to national prominence. She has also displayed a commitment towards social causes and has been a keen activist for society fighting for the causes of civil and human rights, saving the environment and non-violence.
